Switzerland is acknowledged worldwide for its high medical standards: progressive universities, qualified doctors, well-trained nursing staff and the most advanced infrastructure to reinforce this reputation. The Swiss health system is privately organized and is the second most expensive health system after the US according to a OECD study of 1998 comparing 23 countries.

Zurich has excellent hospital facilities, both public and private.

Public Hospitals

The University Hospital (Universitaetspital) is the largest and best-equipped hospital in the city and is open to all as a publicly owned hospital. Every year, almost 130,000 patients look to the University Hospital for outpatient treatment. Every year, more than 34,000 persons are treated as in-patients. The University Hospital combines 29 medical units.

The Children’s Hospital (Kinderspital) (German only) is a medical unit of the University Hospital and provides excellent pediatric medical treatment for newborn babies and children up to 16 years. There is a close cooperation based on different research projects between the Children’s Hospital and the Boston Children’s Hospital, the Harvard Medical School and the University of London.

The Orthopedic University Clinic Balgrist (German only) is another unit of the University hospital. This clinic is specialized in orthopedic surgery, rehabilitation and sports medicine.

The Triemli Spital (German only) and the Waid Spital (German only) are municipal hospitals. They provide medical care to the residents of the canton Zurich.


Private Clinics

The Hirslanden Clinic and the Im Park Clinic cover all of the specialized areas of an acute hospital with accredited doctors on its roster. The accredited doctors are professional doctors with their own practices that are registered for clinic work. They work in close cooperation with the clinic in areas such as anesthetics, cardiology/heart surgery, radiology and in the maternity ward.

The latest medical methods are employed to meet the needs of patients for increasingly shorter stays. Many treatments are now handled on an outpatient basis and the tendency is rising. With their well-trained and motivated staff, the clinics guarantee individual care in pleasant surroundings. Accommodation is also of the highest quality. All rooms are equipped with shower/toilet, direct-dial telephone and television, wonderful cuisine, lounges for visitors and patients. Cafeterias or restaurants as well as a hairdressing salons are part of the basic facilities at each clinic.

The clinics serve a relative high percentage of patients from abroad. For this purpose, cooperation arrangements have been made with international and national insurance companies.

The Medical Information and Service Center is part of the Hirslanden Group, the largest provider of medical services in the acute sector in Switzerland. The Center is also organized to deal with the special requirements of patients and guests from outside Switzerland. It offers assistance in the selection of a suitable clinic and a qualified specialist as well as in the organization of all the services required (e.g. interpreter services, health spa stays, organization of preventive check-ups).

The Hirslanden Clinic has its own emergency care center for immediate round-the-clock care, 365 days a year. It has an emergency doctor on standby as well as the clinic’s own operating teams. Patients who are unable to reach their consultant or general practitioner in advance can use the emergency number (044 387 35 35) for direct connection to the emergency doctor at the Hirslanden Clinic. If absolutely no time must be lost, the patients can be transported directly to the emergency care center at the Hirslanden Clinic by relatives or ambulance.

The Bethanien Clinic (German only) is a distinguished private hospital specialized in different kinds of surgery (e.g. orthopedics, eye, internal medicine, urology and gynecology). The 160 accredited doctors are professional doctors with their own practices and are registered for clinic work. A hotel and a bistro are integrated in the clinic.

The Pyramid Clinic (German only) is a modern private clinic for outpatient and short stay in-patient surgery. With its one external and four internal operating theatres, 25 in-patient beds and a day clinic with 15 beds, the hospital carries out about 3,500 operations yearly. 10% of the patients are foreigners. The clinic offers four-star hotel comfort and the surgical services currently include the following: orthopedic plastic, facial, hand, eye, ear, nose and throat surgery and gynecology as well. The clinic also accepts emergencies that fall into its areas of specialization. A physician is present around the clock and other physicians are always on call.

The Schulthess Clinic is one of the leading hospitals in Europe for orthopedic surgery, spine and spinal cord surgery, neurology, rheumatology, rehabilitation and sports medicine. Specialists treat patients with diseases, malformations, and traumatic and postraumatic conditions of the musculoskeletal system.
